Brazilian Ju Jitsu (BJJ) is an art designed for the smaller
person to use leverage and position to their advantage. This art was designed
by the Gracie family and has now taken the martial art world by storm. BJJ teaches
the student how to escape from bigger opponents and uses choke holds, joint
locks and submission moves to finish their opponent. Although BJJ has been viewed
as a very rough style in which students often get harmed here at Wagner's Martial
Arts Academy we take a lighter approach with light grappling. Light grappling
means that we don't use muscle for a technique but we use the technique in its
purest form. If you can apply the technique without muscle, if the need would
arise in a situation where the person is stronger than you then using muscle
would enhance the technique. This is a style that was made for smaller people
but larger people can be just as proficient. BJJ is great for women's self-defense,
while most women do not like to get close to a man, in any rape situation that
will occur. What we teach in a very non-threatening way is for women to be able
to defend themselves on the ground against any attacker.
If you feel this style is not for you, we do offer other self-defense based
styles. Kenpo Karate is an innovative system that teaches realistic self-defense.
Hwa Rang is for the student committed to learning all aspects of combat.
